Basketball Knicks need to sign Kevin Durant as soon as free agency opens by Ricky Jackson June 16, 2019 As free agency draws closer, top tier free agents are looking to go places other than Madison Square Garden. Kyrie Irving is reportedly looking to take his talents across the bridge and sign with the Brooklyn Nets. Irving played in Boston this past season. Irving, along with Kevin Durant were linked to the Knicks all of last season. After trading for Anthony Davis this week, the Los Angeles Lakers are the front runners to obtain Kemba Walker. Walker has spent all eight of his playing years in Charlotte. He averaged 26 points and 4 rebounds for the Hornets last season. Walker is on record saying he would take a pay cut to stay in Charlotte, but he might feel differently now with Lebron and AD in LA. The big trade that went down today might entice Kemba to sign with the Lakers. Klay Thompson, who suffered a torn ACL in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, is a top five free agent this summer. The belief is that he is going to re-sign with the Golden State Warriors for the max contract. Kawhi Leonard, who recently captured his second championship and second Finals MVP will have a lot of teams after him. A player who is hard to read, you just don’t know where Kawhi will end up. He could stay in Toronto and sign for the max. Many NBA analysts think he will bail from Toronto for the Clippers. Leonard is from California and playing for your hometown city/state is a dream come true for many players. The Knicks could go after him but signing with New York is unlikely. Then there’s Kevin Durant, one of the best scorers in NBA history. The 10x All Star averaged 26 points and 6 rebounds with the Warriors last season. Durant was the key prize in free agency this season until he torn his Achilles in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. He is expected to miss the majority of the 2019-20 season. We don’t know how his injury may affect his decision making in free agency, but if he decides to leave Golden State the Knicks should put everything on the table and get him signed. The Knicks could sign Durant to a four year contract. He is that great and with him signed, free agents Jimmy Butler or Khris Middleton could be inclined to sign with New York. If the Knicks do sign Durant, we know he will miss the majority of his first year, but the remaining three years would be something special with him in New York. Durant would be the most coveted superstar in a Knicks uniform since the Knicks traded for Carmelo Anthony in 2011. The New York Knicks need a main attraction in the city and it all begins on June 30, at 5:59 pm.
