According to sources, Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving expressed to the front office in a meeting last week that he wants out of Cleveland. Apparently the former champion wants to be more of the focal point of an offense. Playing next to LeBron James, of course, will make almost any player the number two option on a squad. Of the teams that Irving is considering a trade to, the Knicks seem to be at the top of the list, along with the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves.

This request could not come at a more perfect time for the Knicks. Earlier this week, star forward Carmelo Anthony expressed that he no longer wanted to play in New York. At this point he would rather play alongside Chris Paul and James Harden in Houston, but it’s not secret the Cavs have also been trying to land Anthony. A trade to Cleveland would put Anthony alongside close friend James and create a truly dynamic scoring duo. A trade scenario seemed unlikely, but with Kyrie Irving talking about switching franchises these days, anything is possible. An Irving-for-Anthony swap would work for both sides since the All-Stars earn similar salaries.

Irving’s agent neither confirmed nor denied the report. A trade between the Cavaliers and Knicks may prove to be beneficial for both sides. Irving would fill a huge void at the point guard position. He has three consecutive years of playoff and finals experience. He had built his reputation on being a clutch scorer, knockdown shooter, and elite ball handler. Pairing Irving with Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. will not only give the Knicks a new look, but could potentially change their entire outlook on next season. The Knicks have said on several occasions that they want to focus on the future. Building with a guy like Kyrie Irving on your roster certainly does a lot of good for a team’s future. The Knicks should act quickly and decisively, but trading Carmelo Anthony for Kyrie Irving may just be the move that the Knicks need to make.
