Lakewood Falls to Delmarva on Saturday, 5-4

Ryan Mountcastle broke a 4-4 tie with a sixth-inning homer and Ryan Meisinger notched a nine-out save for the Delmarva (Md.) Shorebirds in their 5-4 win over the visiting Lakewood BlueClaws on Saturday night.

The Shorebirds (34-26) have won two of three games from Lakewood. The series finale is Sunday. Lakewood (24-37), which had won four of its previous five games, is 4-7 against Delmarva this season.

Lakewood’s Josh Tobias opened the eighth with a double, but was stranded. In the ninth, the tying run was at first base with one out, but Meisinger got Carlos Duran and Grenny Cumana to pop out.

Meisinger earned his fourth save of the year. Three have been nine-out saves.

Lakewood took a 3-1 lead. Jiandido Tromp blasted his eighth home run of the year and second of the series, a drive in the first. Lakewood added a run in the second on an RBI single by Brendon Hayden and a run in the third on a Tobias groundout.

Delmarva swung ahead with three runs in the fourth. The first run scored on a wild pitch. Yermin Mercedes slugged a two-run homer off the left-field foul pole to cap the scoring.

Lakewood tied the game in the fourth on an RBI from Deivi Grullon. Mouncastle put Delmarva ahead 5-4 in the fifth with a homer off Jose Taveras.

The BlueClaws’ starter, Taveras (2-6) allowed five runs on eight hits through five innings. Edgar Garcia followed with three scoreless innings.

Delmarva starter Reid Love (3-4) surrendered four runs through six innings for the win. Damek Tomscha and Hayden each had two hits for Lakewood, the Philadelphia Phillies’ low Class A farm team which competes in the South Atlantic League.

Delmarva is a Baltimore Orioles affiliate.

The series concludes at 2:05 p.m. Lefty Tyler Gilbert (3-5) will start for Lakewood. He will be opposed by righty Christian Alvarado (3-4).
