Olympics / Team USA Laurie Hernadez Among Hacked Athletes by Daniel Popoloski September 19, 2016 USA Gymnastics found out Monday that Laurie Hernandez was among one of the athletes whose medical records were accessed during the hacking of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Laurie Hernandez (Old Bridge, NJ) was given therapeutic-use exemption (TUE) to treat acute inflammation in February and March of 2016 USA Gymnastics said, right during the time when she made the jump to senior level gymnastics. All of the proper paperwork was filed in order to be allowed to take the medication. She had several major injuries throughout her career, like most gymnasts, including a fractured wrist, as well as a torn patellar tendon in 2014, causing her the last six months of that season. It was not stated if the injury she suffered in 2016 was in relation to those maladies. Hernandez was one of the breakout stars of the Olympic games in Rio, coming home with a gold medal in the team gymnastics competition, as well as a silver on balance beam. She is currently on Dancing With the Stars, as well as participating in the Kellogg’s Tour of Champions along with the other 2016 gymnastics team members. Simone Biles, Serena and Venus Williams, and Elena Delle Donne were among the American athletes whose medical records were released in the hack, an attack that affected athletes around the world. Many athletes have shrugged off the hack results however, publically saying that they had no shame in the approved drugs that they had taken. Simone Biles issued a statement saying that she had taken treatment for ADHD. Tennis star Petra Kvitova was among the athletes hacked as well, prompting a statement of “To say that Petra Kvitova suffers from asthma and uses medication for treatment is the same revelation as saying she’s won Wimbledon,” a spokesman for the Czech tennis player, Karel Tejkal, said. While released medical records could raise some flags, there doesn’t seem to be much sensitive information that would cause issues with some of the best in the world.
