Liberty Hosting Meet & Greet At The Rock

The New York Liberty experienced the unparalleled excitement last fall when the Knicks rolled out the red carpet for Amar’e Stoudemire. Now that their Madison Square Garden co-tenants are into the offseason, it’s time for New York’s other pro basketball team to feel the energy and hit the court.

Only this time, the tip-off is across the river.

The Liberty will officially move into their temporary home in Newark tomorrow, May 19, as the organization, Prudential Center and Brick City officials host the “Welcome the Liberty to Newark.” Similar to the festivities held at the Rock when the NCAA men’s basketball tournament rolled into town in March, Thursday’s program will boast an all-star lineup and activities for all fans.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker will be among the dignitaries aboard the welcome wagon. Booker is even expected to suit up, shedding his usual garb for a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. He’ll be squaring off with Liberty super star Cappie Pondexter in a game of one-on-one.

Booker, an accomplished athlete while at Old Tappan High School and at Stanford, might need a little luck guarding Pondexter, a first-team all-WNBA selection last season. We know that the mayor has been working out and shed a few pounds since the beginning of the year, but we’ll see if all of that translates into a decent jump shot.

Pondexter and all of her teammates, as well as Liberty Head Coach John Whisenant, will be available to meet with their fans and sign autographs. The event is free for all fans and begins at 11 a.m. at the Rock.

With a multi-million dollar, multi-faceted renovation project underway at Madison Square Garden, the Liberty last fall announced that the team will play its home games for the next three seasons at the Prudential Center. The Liberty will play their first preseason game in Newark May 25 against the Washington Mystics. The first regular season home game is June 11 against the Indiana Fever.
