The retooling of the New York Liberty continued with the blockbuster announcement that two time All-Star guard Epiphanny Prince will be coming to New York. The price will be Cappie Pondexter, who for five years was the star of the franchise.

The return of another New York product, in this case Murry Bergtraum High School in Brooklyn, where Prince garnered four PSAL Championships.

“We are thrilled to have Epiphanny join the Liberty and bring another hometown product back to New York City,” Liberty Senior VP of Business and Business Operations, Kristin Bernert excitedly pronounced today.

“Epiphanny is a great talent and one of the top guards in the WNBA,” added Head Coach Bill Laimbeer. “She possesses a high basketball IQ, which are attributes that will serve her well in the transition into our system.”

Cappie, who averaged 17.9 points in her Liberty career saw her numbers drop to 13 pts a game last season. She also loses out in one crucial spot, probably the main reason for the trade, age. Prince, 27 to Cappie’s 32 will make New York younger. Her 15.0 pts a game and her playmaking skills will be a valuable addition.

Epiphanny led the Chicago Sky to the WNBA Finals last year, but Cappie definitely left an impression in New York.

“Cappie has been an important part of the Liberty,” Bernert explained. “We wish her the best in her return to her home city of Chicago.”

The need for a top level guard that can fill the basketball and is closer to her prime should bring the outside game to open up the paint for center Tina Charles.

“She is a proven winner and she gives us a scoring guard to complement the inside game of Charles for a long time,” Bernert said.

Epiphanny is excited to be playing in the mecca of basketball. This move shows how serious the Liberty are in getting “the pieces” to contend for a championship. Epiphanny is in agreement that this is a grand opportunity to finally gain the prize, the WNBA Championship.

“Being able to return to New York and play for the Liberty at Madison Square Garden is a dream come true,” Prince shared. “I look forward to playing in front of my friends and family and bringing a championship to my hometown.”
