Lindenhurst’s Dennis Bermudez calls it a career after UFC Brooklyn victory

Since 2011, Dennis Bermudez has fought some of the best the UFC has to offer. While he has been streaky throughout his career with the organization, he always found some way to put on a show. Now, he goes out on top in front of family and friends.

Following a unanimous decision win over Te Edwards at UFC Fight Night 143 in Brooklyn, NY, Bermudez (17-9) called it a career. Closing off the prelims on ESPN+ (under the UFC’s new ESPN partnership), “The Menace” took off his gloves, put them in the middle of the octagon and announced his retirement.

“It’s pretty awesome that I get to do it here in New York,” Bernudez stated to Jon Anik after the fight. “I’ve been through some stuff and I thought about hanging up the gloves after those four losses in a row and I want my kids to look back at this, and even though I went through adversity, I finished on top.”

Bermudez utilized his takedown defense to work around Edwards. He even held him in a guillotine at one point. The aggressor throughout, Bermudez’s ground and pound game was getting the job done. Keeping the pace, Bermudez couldn’t quite put Edwards away easily, even with the latter not giving him much to work with.

A member of Long Island MMA, Bermudez was  7-2 before joining the UFC for The Ultimate Fighter 14. He made it into the finals before losing to Diego Brandao. After that he went on a seven-fight win streak, beating fighters like Steven Siler and Max Holloway. He continued to face some of the best the UFC had to offer, including The Korean Zombie and Jeremy Stephens. As stated before, he was on a four-fight losing streak up until the victory.

The wrestling machine will now focus on family, and potentially an opportunity to train fighters. Speaking of family, Bermudez was fighting for his uncle, who is currently going through a fight of his own.
