Born in Glastonbury, Connecticut, and living and training in Clifton, New Jersey, Donn Cabral is ready to bring a taste of the tri-state area to Rio.

Cabral secured his second Olympic bid in the 3000m steeplechase when he finished third in the race at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a time of 8:26.37. The time was significantly worse than his personal record 8:19.14, which he recorded in 2012, but it still was fast enough to qualify for the Olympics. Cabral was in fifth, but dug deep in the final 200m and last two obstacles, and snuck his way onto the team.

Cabral dominated during his time in college while he attended Princeton University, winning the national championships in 2012, after being the runner-up the two years prior. He also set the American collegiate record in the steeplechase, which is part of a pedigree that earned him eight All-American honors during his time in college.

It will be unlikely that Cabral will come home with a medal, considering that his best career finish was in the 2012 Olympics where he finished in eighth. He actually led that race at the 1000m mark, but he wasn’t able to keep up the pace, and eventually fell back into the pack. He’s going to have to wrong a very strong race, as his career best time wouldn’t even be one of the top fifteen times this year. An impressive showing would see Cabral qualify for the event final.

Kenya has dominated the event, having won the past eight gold medals in the event, as well as 17 of the past 24 medals altogether. The nation is expected to dominate once again, headlined by defending gold medalist Ezekiel Kemboi and Conseslus Kipruto. No American male has medaled in the event since Brian Diemer earned a bronze medal in 1984.

Cabral graduated from Glastonbury High School, and then attended Princeton, where he graduated with an economics major. He moved to Clifton after graduating to train at the NJ/NY Track Club. He is currently sponsored by Nike.
