Long Island’s Chris Algieri to face Tommy Coyle inside MSG on June 1st

Another highly-anticipated bout has been added to a loaded MSG card.

In one of the most recent controversial bouts boxing has put on, Chris Algieri defeated Danny Gonzalez back in January for the vacant WBO International Junior Welterweight Title. Now, he has a chance to show why he is champion when he faces Tommy Coyle on June 1st inside Madison Square Garden.

Algieri (23-3) will be on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua v. Andy Ruiz bout. He has had 25 pro fights in New York, but this will be his first time competing inside Madison Square Garden’s main bowl.

“I’m very excited to be fighting once again at The Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden on June 1,” Algieri stated. “I know that Tommy Coyle is another tough test for me and that a victory will bring me one step closer to another World title fight.”

Algieri has fought twice inside MSG’s Hulu Theater. His three losses were a result of a few mistakes. The first was moving in weight to face Manny Pacquiao. The second and third time was facing a game Amir Khan and Errol Spence Jr. Now on a two-fight win streak, Algieri is ready to show that he truly is the real deal. His bout with Gonzalez was considered a true nail-biter; several scorecards had the fight in favor of Gonzalez.

His opponent sees this as a true profile fight. Coyle (25-4) is on a three-fight win streak, his most recent one a unanimous decision win over Ryan Kielczweski. He is pulling an Algieri by moving in weight. Originally a lightweight, Coyle wants to prove the world this tough opponent is no match for him.

One thing to put into consideration is Coyle’s mindset. He is treating this as the fight of his career, which is something to look at if you are Algieri.

“I’m expecting a Gatti vs. Ward style fight, I really am,” Coyle stated. “I know how tough Chris is, you’ve only got to watch him in the Provodnikov fight, I’m not sure if he broke his eye socket or not but he just gritted his teeth and battled on. I think we’re both cut from the same cloth. It can only go one way and I think that’s a war.

Both are extremely hungry fighters looking to show the world who they truly are. In Algieri’s case, it is a chance to prove he belongs with the heavy hitters. Fighting under the bright lights of MSG can kick the adrenaline of anyone into overdrive. Will it do the same when gold is on the line?
