Lugo – Gsellman (Mets 360) Injuries have hampered the Mets’ season more times than anyone can count. When there is someone waiting to return, there seems to always be someone to replace them. That is the case today, as Seth Lugo has been put back on the DL with an impingement of the right shoulder. Robert Gsellman returns after suffering from a strained left hamstring in June. GM Sandy Alderson would probably be happier with Gsellman’s promotion if he was doing well in his rehab starts. In four starts in Double-A Binghamton, he went 1-0 with a 229 ERA. In 17 games with the Mets this year, Gsellman is 5-5 with a 6.15 ERA. With an already struggling pitching staff trying to find it’s mojo, Gsellman will look to do the same. Lugo’s injury’s this season have all been about bad timing. After dominating in the World Baseball Classic, Lugo was shut down after suffering from a torn UCL. Since coming back, he has a 5-3 record with a 4.85 ERA. Something to keep in mind: the 27-year old had an option to have Tommy John Surgery but looked for another method of healing. The timetable for his return is unknown. Once key pieces of the Mets’ rotation/bullpen plans, both Gsellman and Lugo have had strange years. Some say they have both been disappointing, while others credit it all to bad luck. It will be interesting to see what their roles will be with the team in the future.
