Mark Teixeira Placed on 15-Day DL

MLB: Cleveland Indians at New York Yankees

On Saturday morning, the New York Yankees announced that first baseman Mark Teixeira has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee injury.

Teixeira was removed prior to the bottom of then third inning in the Yankees 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday evening.

The injury is being called an articular cartilage tear, a tear of cartilage in the knee area.

“It’s something he’s dealt with before,” manager Joe Girardi said after the game. “For whatever reason, it started locking up tonight.”

Teixeria is currently hitting .179 and is in the midst of a 3-for-43 slump.

The Yankees will now look to rookie Rob Refsnyder to handle the majority of the play at first base. Refsnyder is 4-for-13 and hitting .308 thus far this season.
