Martin Brodeur Returns to New Jersey Devils in New Role

The GOAT is coming back home.

New Jersey Devils legend Martin Brodeur will be returning to the team he played almost his entire career with. After stepping down from his role as assistant general manager of the St Louis Blues Tuesday, the Devils have named their former long-time goaltender as their Executive Vice President of Business Development. In this role, Brodeur will be working across all departments of the organization to identify, capitalize on and develop business opportunities for the Devils, Prudential Center and the outer Newark community as a whole.

“It feels fantastic to be back home here in New Jersey,” Brodeur told the Devils official website. “This unique opportunity will allow me to build on existing relationships in the business community and take on a new challenge in my career. I’ve been able to work in all facets of the game of hockey and have had a growing interest in the business surrounding the game. Working with Hugh and his team will be beneficial for all of us. Over 20 years in New Jersey, I was lucky enough to make connections that I can now use to help the Devils grow, not only in this area but beyond.”

Brodeur had a career for the ages as an NHL goalie, playing 22 seasons and a total of 1266 games, all but seven of them with New Jersey. In those 1266 games, Brodeur is 691-397-49 with 105 ties. Furthermore, he practically owns the NHL record books for goaltenders, as he holds the record for most wins (691), shutouts (125), wins in a season (48), 40 win seasons (8), 30 wins seasons (13), postseason shutouts (24), shutouts in a single postseason (7), and shutouts in a Stanley Cup Final (3). He also filled up his trophy case quite a bit, winning the 1994 Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year), four Vezna Trophies (Best Goaltender), five William M Jennings Trophies (Fewest Team Goals), and was a ten-time All-Star. He is a three-time Stanley Cup Champion (1995, 2000, 2003), as well as a five-time Eastern Conference Champion (1995, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2012). Last but not least, Brodeur was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this past summer and will be inducted this November.

In the back of his mind, Brodeur always thought he would be back with the Devils sooner rather than later.

“When I didn’t come to an agreement with St. Louis to continue since they needed a little more time from me than I was willing to give, that’s when I reached out to Weber and he was definitely excited that I did,” Brodeur told NHL.com. “We came up with a plan and today we’re moving forward with it. I think in the back of my head I always thought I was going to come back but I just didn’t know how and when. When this opportunity came about I definitely jumped on it. Every time I came back it felt normal for me to be in New Jersey. I knew I would be welcomed here and I’m excited it’s happening now.”

Martin Brodeur is not only the greatest player to ever wear a New Jersey Devils sweater; he’s widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest goaltenders to ever play the game. Now he’s back with the same organization he was so successful with, and will hopefully be a part of more success.
