MBB Big East Tournament: Villanova Avoids Upset, Defeats Georgetown 81-67

The Villanova Wildcats defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 81-67 on Thursday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Big East Tournament.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was junior guard Josh Hart who tallied 25 points and senior guard Ryan Arcidiacono who had 19 points including 11 in the second half.

Junior forward Kris Jenkins also contributed 15 points and four rebounds to the win.

The Wildcats finished the first half leading by just one, 28-27, due in large part to the play of Georgetown’s Tre Campbell who had eight first half points including six from beyond the three-point line.

L.J. Peak also had 17 points including 14 in the second half for the Hoyas.

The Wildcats would pull away midway through the second half in large part to Hart’s 20 second half points.

The win is Villanova’s first against Georgetown in Big East Tournament history.

“It was a very good win for us,” Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright said. “I am very pleased wit our team and I tell you what, that (Georgetown) is going to be a good team next year. They stuck together till the end.”

When asked about the Wildcats effective three-point shooting Wright stated, “Our threes kept us in it. We were struggling at the rim. Thank God for the threes tonight.”

Arcidiacono was really able to get his game transition game going in the second half as he pulled up from the right elbow twice for three-point baskets.

“Coach always tells me to be aggressive and I was able to get open looks and hit a couple of shots,” Arcidiacono stated after the win.

Villanova will play the winner of No. 4 Providence and No. 5 Butler on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
