College MBB: Pirates Showing Everyone They Belong by Staff Post February 26, 2016 Photo by: Catalina Fragoso “Talk about a dream, try to make it real.” New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen sang these words in his famous song “Badlands.” The Seton Hall University men’s basketball team has been talking about a dream of appearing in an NCAA Tournament for a decade, and they are finally right on the verge. Having to win just two more games to guarantee a spot in the NCAA Tournament, the Pirates dominated the Providence Friars 70-52 on Thursday night in Newark, NJ to improve their overall record to 20-7 and 10-5 in conference play. The Pirates have won seven of their last eight conference games and have put themselves in sole possession of third place behind current No. 1 Villanova and No. 5 Xavier. The Pirates have reached the 20 wins plateau for the 15th time in school history, but this is just the second time under current Head Coach Kevin Willard. The Pirates have been led by sophomore Isaiah Whitehead, who in his last five games coming down the stretch is averaging 19.8 points and 5.3 assists per game. The Brooklyn native has been electrifying all season and is playing at a different level than a year ago. Whitehead’s latest masterpiece was 25 points, nine assists and six rebounds in-front of 14 NBA scouts and a crowd of about 8,600 on Thursday. Along with Whitehead are sophomores Angel Delgado, Desi Rodriguez, Khadeen Carrington and Ish Sanogo. Delgado has logged 13 double-doubles thus far this season and averages 9.8 rebounds a game. Rodriguez and Carrington are also contributing down the stretch as they had 11 and 12 points respectively on Thursday, while Sanogo has played strong on both sides of the ball. The Pirates have also looked to Derrick Gordon to set the tone defensively as the senior is considered the best defender in the BIG EAST. He has assumed leadership of the 20 win team. The Pirates will have another tough test on Sunday as they host No. 5 Xavier. In front of another packed house, the Blue and White will have a chance to clinch a spot in the dance. Just like Springsteen said, the Pirates have a dream, and are one win away from making it real. “Talk about a dream, try to make it real.” New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen sang these words in his famous song “Badlands.” The Seton Hall University men’s basketball team has been talking about a dream of appearing in an NCAA Tournament for a decade, and they are finally right on the verge.
