Hockey Metropolitan Riveters Forward Alexa Gruschow Named Player of the Week by Chip Gianni November 7, 2017 After putting up two goals in Rochester, New York on Saturday night, Metropolitan Riveters forward, Alexa Gruschow was named the National Women’s Hockey League Player of the Week on Monday. The Riveters defeated the defending Isobel Cup Champions, Buffalo Beauts in their neutral site meeting at Bill Gray’s Iceplex by a score of six to two. Gruschow opened the scoring Saturday night, 2:56 into the opening frame with a short-handed tally. Her second goal, gave the Riveters a 3-1 lead with about seven minutes left in the middle period. Gruschow said, “I have to give some credit to my line mate, and last week’s player of the week, Miye D’Oench, because she had a hand in helping me get both goals in Saturday’s game. Just like last weekend, it was an all-around team effort that earned us this win.” She went on to continue, “It was an extremely physical game to say the least, but our team stuck together and stayed focused, all the way through our roster, including our coaching staff. This allowed us to get the win.” Gruschow also noted that the team was glad to be given the opportunity to play in the neutral site game and help to grow the game. She said, “The stands were packed with excited young female hockey players from the tournament that was held at the rink, potential future NWHL stars, the perfect crowd.” D’Oench also added a goal, to her two helpers on the night. Princeton University defender, and Horsham, Pennsylvania native, Kelsey Koelzer, added two goals and Westport, Connecticut native, Rebecca Russo, also scored for the Riveters. The Beauts scoring came from Corinne Buie and Taylor Accursi. Next up the Connecticut Whale Gruschow and the Riveters will head to Stamford, Connecticut on Saturday, October 11 where they will take on the Connecticut Whale at Terry Conners Ice Rink. In two games this season, Gruschow has won 16 of her 24 faceoffs and has three goals and one assist. She is second in the league scoring race, behind teammate, D’Oench’s six points.
