Mets agree to a five-year extension with Jacob deGrom

deGrom won the NL Cy Young last season with a 10-9 record and a 1.70 ERA

Throughout the past few weeks, there were a number of elite players signing extensions to their clubs. One member of the Mets who everyone has been hoping get their just due is Jacob deGrom. Last season’s NL Cy Young winner, deGrom was close to becoming a free agent. After months of questioning and a lack of communication, the Mets finally secured their man.

The team has reportedly signed deGrom to a five-year, $137.5 million extension that runs through 2023. The deal also includes a sixth-year option with a full no-trade clause and an opt-out after 2022. Andy Martino was the first to break the news.

The 30-year-old deGrom will stay with the team for the foreseeable future. Surprising the team when he debuted against the Yankees in 2014, deGrom ending up winning the Rookie of the Year award. He ending up shocking the baseball world at the 2015 All-Star Game before winning a career-high 15 games in 2017.

Last season, deGrom had a season to remember on a Mets team many would like to forget about. With only a 10-9 record, deGrom was able to throw 269 strikeouts with a 1.70 ERA. That was enough to wipe away the competition for the Cy Young award. Since 2014, deGrom has a 55-41 record with a 2.67 ERA and 1,000 strikeouts. He is almost reaching Mets records in strikeouts, WAR and ERA.

It was actually the current General Manager of the team, Brodie Van Wagenen, who wanted the Mets to sign deGrom to an extension way back when he was his agent. The Mets were wary of doing so, seeing how their last long-term deals with David Wright ($138 million) and Yoenis Cespedes ($75 million) have not worked out how they wanted. However, if the Mets were serious about being contenders, signing deGrom was the move they had to make. Brodie realized this and being a man of his word, was able to secure the one piece fans really cared about this offseason.

Noah Syndergaard’s passion might have helped deGrom’s case. “Thor” has been adamant about the Mets securing the other ace of the team. The Mets have a lot of thinking to do regarding a Syndergaard extension as well.

With just two days until Opening Day, the Mets were able to do what many thought was impossible. They now focus on potentially securing up players like Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario. Their Opening Day starter has what he, fans, media and everyone else in the world asked for, making this a true match in baseball heaven.
