Mr. Met – Mets (Complex)

The Mets have shown some signs of improvement, so of course that means a setback was bound to happen. Out of nowhere, the injury bug hit the team hard. This past week alone has felt like a roller coater ride that you can’t get off of.

Let us take a look at all of the recent injuries for the Mets, shall we?

Matt Harvey – Where do we begin with The Dark Knight? The Mets announced that Harvey has been placed on the 10-Day Disabled List with a stress injury to the scapula bone in his right shoulder. This comes after Wednesday’s outing against the Cubs, when his velocity drastically went down to 91 MPH. It has been a rough go-around for Harvey, who finally admitted he was having issues. Over his last nine starts, Harvey walked 30 batters in 45 innings, posting a 6.60 ERA.

It’s safe to say that Matt Harvey is not the same fireballer that took the mound with authority long ago. This man has failed his city.

Neil Walker – The second baseman for the Mets went on the 10-Day DL with a partial hamstring tear. Walker is expected to miss several weeks according to the team, with no timetable for his potential return. Speaking to Walker last weekend in Atlanta, he admitted to feeling a lot of discomfort. He was willing to play through it until the pain became too much for him. Speaking to the media, Walker was optimistic about a quick return. He stated:

“If we’re looking at a month, I feel pretty confident that I’ll be right back in the swing of things when I come back. There’s no good time for an injury. So I’m going to do everything I can to get back as quickly as I can.”

This is the worst time for Walker to be down, as he was batting .319 with seven homers and had a .973 OPS since the start of May. His slick defense will be missed as well, especially with question marks in T.J. Rivera and recently brought up and former first round pick Gavin Cecchini.

Juan Lagares – A significant loss to the outfield, Lagares left Thursday’s game with what ended up being a fracture of the IP joint in his left thumb. The outfielder attempted to make a great catch off of Anthony Rendon’s hit in the 5th inning, but it wasn’t meant to be. Trainer Ray Ramirez immediately jogged to the outfield to take a look. Lagares left the game when the Mets were about to bat during the bottom half of the inning. Matt Reynolds and Brandon Nimmo have both been brought up to fill roster spots for Harvey and Lagares.

Last year, Lagares tore a ligament in the same thumb. It is a big blow to the outfield, especially with as strong of an arm and the great range that he has. Runners feared him on the base paths. Curtis Granderson? Not so much. It is unknown when Lagares would be ready to return to the team.

In addition: Noah Syndergaard, who went on the DL with a partial lat tear, won’t be able to throw for another four weeks. According to GM Sandy Alderson, his lat is not healing as quickly as expected. The new timetable for Syndergaard’s return seems to be late August to early September. Before then, he has a long way to go. Syndergaard would have to go through more tests, warmups, etc.

All of these injuries are just another story to tell in a somewhat disappointing season for The Amazins. With no shot for Amed Rosario to be called up anytime soon, the Mets will have to play through it all. The next few months should be a big test for the team. It’s a chance to see if they can thrive under pressure, or crumble underneath it.
