Baseball Mets Make A Significant Move By Trading For Marcus Stroman Stroman was one of the most wanted pitchers in baseball before the Mets pulled the upset. by Daniel Yanofsky July 28, 2019 Heading into the 2019 season, Brodie Van Wagenen made a decree for all major league teams to “come get us”, a phrase that has recently been mocked at. Heading nowhere fast, the Mets were still trying to give fans hope they were somewhat serious about competing. One simple trade might have turned some heads around. It was announced that the Mets traded minor leaguers Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson to the Blue Jays in exchange for Marcus Stroman. As part of the deal, the Mets will get $1.5 million to balance the $2,506,452 remaining on Stroman’s $7.4 million contract. The Long Island native is set to be a free agent following the 2020 season. In six years with the Blue Jays Stroman has amassed a 47-45 record with a 3.76 ERA. This season, the 2019 All-Star is 6-11 with a 2.96 ERA. For the past few weeks, Stroman and the Blue Jays office have not been having the most constructive of conversations. He knew his time was up but was expecting to go to a playoff contender. With the Mets, Stroman goes to a team that is in the middle of a youth movement. He joins former high school opponent Steven Matz. NEW YORK! Where I was born. Where my heart lies. Where my family resides. Crazy excited for this part of my journey. Some things were meant to be! @Mets #HDMH pic.twitter.com/Z2H3GaxfLG — Marcus Stroman (@MStrooo6) July 29, 2019 The return the Blue Jays got leaves a few questions on Brodie’s front. If you recall, the GM of the Mets sent a package of young players to the Seattle Mariners for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz. While both are not thriving as many had hoped, young stars Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn appear to be doing well under their new team. This time around, the Mets gave up 24-year-old Kay and Woods-Richardson, two of the top arms in their system. Only time will tell how this trade turns out. With rumors of Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard being traded, the Stroman signing makes things extremely interesting in Flushing. As the MLB Trade Deadline approaches, will we see another huge change to the organization? As far as Stroman goes, the transition to another league is never easy. He will, however, look to make the most out of whatever opportunities will be put in front of him.
