Mets Name Local New Yorker As Honorary Bat Girl

A tradition since 2009, the Bat Girl program helps raise breast cancer awareness.

The Mets will be hosting their 2019 Honorary Bat Girl this Sunday (May 12) on Mother’s Day. Floral Park’s Jennifer Murphy will get a chance to tour Citi Field and meet the players, be put on first base before the game and line up with the Mets’ coaching staff prior to the National Anthem.

The Bat Girl contest, started in 2009, is part of the annual “Going To Bat Against Breast Cancer” initiative, which has been around the sport of baseball since 2006. Selected winners of the contest have been affected by breast cancer in some way or another and have demonstrated a true commitment in eradicating the disease for good.

Jennifer was a 30-year-old pregnant woman when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She just recently finished treatments this mast March while also giving birth to her healthy daughter, Marlowe. Her commitment in spreading awareness is something to celebrate:

– While undergoing treatment last year, Jennifer participated in a runway fashion show, raising money for breast cancer research.

– Jennifer went to the NYSS in Albany to speak about Shannon’s Law. The bill, if passed, would lower the insurance age for mammograms to 35.

This Sunday, players around the league will use pink bats and wear pink wristbands and hats. The pink breast cancer ribbon will be displayed on their uniforms.
