Robinson Cano sidelined with torn left hamstring

For the third time this season, Robinson Cano has found himself on the injured list. After aggravating his left hamstring on Sunday, Cano was placed on the 10-day IL with what was believed to be a strained hamstring. However, an MRI on Monday revealed that Cano is dealing with a torn left hamstring. While Cano will not have to undergo surgery, there is no timetable for his return.

Cano’s first year as a Met has gone anything but smoothly. In addition to multiple injuries, Cano’s performance at the plate this season has been underwhelming. There have also been instances of a lack of hustle that drew criticism. Overall, the second baseman is hitting .252/.295/.415 with 82 hits, ten home runs and 58 strikeouts over 325 at-bats. Along with Cano’s struggles, the disappointing outings from Edwin Diaz, who was traded to New York with Cano, have caused fans to question and criticize the off-season deal

Even though Cano’s regular-season numbers don’t reflect those of players like Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil, Cano has proved to be an asset over the past couple of weeks. Since the All-Star break, the veteran has hit .289 with six home runs and 14 RBIs. His standout moment came on July 23, where Cano produced his first career three home run game. With their improved offense and stellar pitching, the Mets have jumped into the race for the NL Wild Card. They have won 13 of their last 14 games and a 59-56 record

Since it is unknown if Cano will return before the regular season is over, the Mets may have to consider adding to their infield. Mickey Callaway stated that there would be a rotation set up consisting of Jeff McNeil, Luis Guillorme and Adeiny Hechavarria. The Mets could also look into Joe Panik, who recently was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants. He may be one of their best options now. Asdrubal Cabrera, who was with the Mets from 2016 to 2018, was picked up by the Nationals Monday. Jed Lowrie’s Mets debut seems to still be up in the air.

Whatever the solution is, the Mets must continue to power through the rest of August if they hope to see the playoffs.
