Mets sign Anthony Swarzak to a two-year deal

In 2017, Swarzak posted a 2.33 ERA while averaging 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Swarzak is considered a safe deal by the Mets, who are rumored to be avoiding high-profile signings. Although the name may not sound sexy, his resume last season does does sound enticing. In 77.1 total innings with the White Sox and the Brewers, he posted a 2.33 ERA. He also averaged 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings. Lefties were left staring at the plate, as they batted a combined .198 against him. It helps throw away some doubt after looking at his career stats; 23-30 record with a 4.22 ERA in 561.1 innings.

A second round pick by the Twins in the 2004 First Year Player Draft, Anthony Swarzak has been around the league a few times. There is a case of familiarity with his latest club. He appeared for the Indians in 2015 when new Mets Manager Mickey Callaway was the pitching coach there. The righties slider appeared to have improved from previous seasons, and the new staff of the Mets can’t wait to tinker with it. If Swarzak is not the only move the Mets make, it could be possible that this was a bargain deal.

When all is said and done, the Mets signed someone that can help take the pressure off of late inning relievers like Jerry Blevins, Jeurys Familia and AJ Ramos. Whether that means he is as consistent as last season is up in the air.

The Mets are officially on the board. What other moves, if any, does GM Sandy Alderson have up his sleeve?
