Neil Ramirez (FanRag Sports)

Today, the Mets added some bullpen help they desperately needed. They also placed one of their key players on an already full disabled list. The team announced today that they have signed Neil Ramirez to a major league contract and that Asdrúbal Cabrera will be going on the 10-Day DL with a sprained left thumb.

To make room on the roster the Mets transferred RHP Jeurys Familia to the 60-Day DL.

Neil Ramirez has had an interesting start to his career to say the least. The 27-year old has been employed by six teams since the start of last season. He was designated for assignment by the Giants, before being claimed by the Blue Jays. They designated him as well, but he opted for free agency instead of heading to the minors. From there, it was easy for the Mets to sign him. The right-hander owns a 3.72 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 92 innings during his four-year big league career.

While Ramirez is not the sexiest pick for the Mets, the team needs some boost in their bullpen. Besides Josh Smoker, who was sent to the minors a few weeks ago, the Mets don’t have that many elite relievers in their system. As a result of the pitchers short outings, the relievers have thrown an average of 3.8 innings per game. They are tired, and the poor effort shown over the past few days show it.

Is Ramirez the savior the Mets have been waiting for? Probably not, but its a step in the right direction.
