Quentin Holmes (AP Photo) The Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New York, Quentin Holmes, was selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 64th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Entry Draft. He was the first tri-state area player chosen in this years’ draft. Holmes has excelled while playing for Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School in East Elmhurst, NY. The 6’1″, 175 lbs outfielder 21 bases in 24 games this season while also hitting .410 with seven home runs and 24 RBI. His speed was never in question as Holmes is one of the fastest prospects in this years draft. What drove his stock up this season was his increase in strength and power. He is also a top-tear defender in the outfield. Combine that with his game-changing speed, the Indians now have a high-reward type player on their hands. At just 17 years old (turns 18 on July 7), there is still more room for growth and strength development. Some scouts compare Holmes to MLB outfielder Cameron Maybin. He could be a potential future leadoff hitter and plus defender in center field who could swipe 50-plus bags. Holmes also was a member of the 18-and-under U.S. national team. He was ranked as the No. 33 prospect in the draft, per MLB.com. Despite his commitment to Mississippi State University, Holmes is expected to sign and join the Indians organization.
