Weekend Sports Trends: Nascar, Rangers, Cavs, and Indy500

Good morning, it’s Monday! Hope you’re having an awesome weekend so far! If you’ve been paying attention to this weekend in sports, you know that the there have been some pretty awesome games.  In addition, there have been some stellar races!

NASCAR Coca-Cola 600

The top trends this weekend include the #CocaCola600 which did an outstanding job of honoring our troops with drivers having names of soldiers on their cars, accompanied by tweets with the hashtag #NascarSalutes all weekend long.  The race at Charlotte Motor Speedway includes 600 miles of racing and is the longest event for NASCAR.  It began late afternoon and ended late in the evening, with Carl Edwards taking his 1st points.  For those who want to get an excellent recap of the event, all you need to do is check out the official Twitter account of Charlotte Motor Speedway which is @CLTMotorSpwy, and be sure to check out the brilliant display of respect by heading over to #NASCARsalutes on Twitter.

#Indy500

Lots of tweets about ‘Kissing the Bricks’ when Juan Pablo Montoya won his second Indy 500, in the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500.

NHL

The #NHLPlayoffs continued and as Sunday evening came to an end, the New York Rangers lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 2-0 shutout.  This puts the New York Rangers behind in the series 3-2.

The Ducks and Blackhawks are tied at 2 all.

NBA

Saturday evening had fans tweeting about Stephan Curry’s outstanding performance against the Houston Rockets.  Although Rockets fans had tweeted about how James Harden was going to have ‘Curry’ for dinner, it was #ChefCurry that got the top trends.  Many fans, as well as, sports analysts are now  touting Curry as a ‘shoe-in’ for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.   In an article published earlier by USA Today, Sam Amick  shared that Curry hit seven of his last nine three-point shots,  and broke down the stats illustrating how  Curry has now broken Reggie Miller’s record for “three pointers made in a single postseason.”

MLB

It was a memorable day at Yankee Stadium, because former Yankee star Bernie Williams has his number retired.  #BernieDay was trending and many former Yankee greats including Joe Torre, were on hand to celebrate.  @ImNotAHRHitter tweeted highlights of when Williams slid into home in the sixth inning of Game 4 of the 1996 World Series.  Although, the Yanks lost to the Rangers later on but the day will forever be a memorable one for Yankee fans, who were on hand for the big celebration.

Sadly, in other MLB news, pitchers seems to be topping the trends due to some rule bending, that resulted in  hefty suspensions.  The latest pitcher in hot water is Brian Matusz for a “foreign substance.”

On a positive note, at least the MLB is managing to stay ahead of the NFL, in the news cycle, and we heard less and less about #Deflategate.
