K.J. McDaniels (NBA.com) Sean Marks made yet another deal during the final hour of the NBA trade deadline, acquiring forward K.J. McDaniels from the Houston Rockets. Both teams have yet to announce the deal and it is also unknown what the Nets are sending back to Houston. Sources say the Rockets simply sent McDaniels into Brooklyn’s open cap space. The 24-year-old McDaniels appeared in 29 games for the Rockets this season, averaging 2.8 points and one rebound. He broke into the league with the Philadelphia 76ers before going to Houston during the 2014-15 season. In total, he has 128 games of NBA experience. For the Rockets, moving McDaniels opens up $3 million in additional cap space for them to add another player. This was a low-risk, high-reward trade for Brooklyn. The Nets have the final three months of the season to see what they have in McDaniels. If he plays well, he could be a potential building block in Brooklyn’s long rebuilding process. If he falters, there are no financial ramifications. From what I’ve seen of McDaniels, he’s an athletic forward who could help improve Kenny Atkinson’s defense. He blocks shots and can defend multiple positions. Brooklyn had one available roster spot after officially waiving Marcus Thornton on Thursday, less than 24 hours after acquiring him and Andrew Nicholson in a trade with the Washington Wizards. With McDaniels in the fold, the Nets’ roster currently stands at 15.
