New York Giants Name Dave Gettleman New GM

The New York Giants announced that they have hired Dave Gettleman as their new general manager on Thursday.

The 66-year-old previously spent 15 years with the Giants, under the tutelage of former general manager Ernie Accorsi. From 1999-2012, Gettleman served as a pro personnel director and senior pro personnel analyst. After his time with New York, he was hired as the Carolina Panthers general manager in 2013.

“Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a general manager and a proven track record,” said both president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch in a press release. “Dave’s experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organization in how we draft and acquire players through free agency.”

Gettleman was one of four candidates in the general manager search, after Jerry Reese was relieved of his duties. Other options included interim general manager Kevin Abrams, vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross, and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick. With Black Monday just days away, the Giants have to set their focus on bringing in a new head coach. Which could explain Gettleman’s hiring on Thursday. Now, the former executive will be in charge of finding Ben McAdoo’s replacement, after he was fired alongside Reese earlier this month.

Gettleman will have numerous tasks to fulfill this offseason. Fixing the Giants’ troublesome offensive line will be a priority. The status of Eli Manning’s future with the team will be on that list as well. Finally, he will be in charge of negotiating a new contract with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

During his tenure, the Panthers had an overall record of 40-23-1. Most notably, Carolina went 15-1 in 2015, where they reached the Super Bowl, losing to the Denver Broncos 24-10. Gettleman was let go by the Panthers on July 17 of this year. He has been known through his career as a staunch contract negotiator. The most notable instance came in pulling the franchise tag off of cornerback Josh Norman in 2016, effectively making him a free agent.

Besides his time with the Giants and Panthers, Gettleman spent time with the Buffalo Bills (1986-1993) and Denver Broncos (1994-1997) as a scout. Throughout his NFL career, Gettleman’s teams have appeared in seven Super Bowls, winning three (1998, 2007, 2011).

Gettleman’s introductory press conference will be at 11:15 am EST on Friday.
