The NBA offseason is a time where successful and struggling teams alike make an effort to retool for the upcoming year. Free agents switch teams, players get traded, executives get fired. All the turbulence behind the scenes happen to ensure an entertaining season for the fans. In that spirit, the Bew Tirj Knicks have had quite the chaotic offseason. The true question is whether or not all of their summer moves will actually pay off.

Phil Jackson’s firing was at the top of many fans’ wishlist, and they got what they wanted. Jackson parted ways with the team and Steve Mills stepped in as President of Basketball operations with Scott Perry coming in as the new GM. Since then the team made some additions in the form of Tim Hardaway Jr., Ramon Sessions, and Michael Beasley as well as the young French talent Frank Ntilikina. The Knicks have also managed to pick up the team option on Kristaps Porzingis. This move solidifies the fact that the franchise wants to keep him as their main guy. Of course, that’s contingent on Carmelo Anthony leaving, which is likely to happen at this point.

The rift between the Knicks and Anthony has widened to an insatiable level. While the Knicks have not directly said they want to part ways, Anthony has declared that he wants out of. At 33 he doesn’t necessarily fit the young direction that the team is intent on taking. His frustration with the franchise and desire to go to the Rockets only plays further into the breakup narrative. That, along with the loss of Derrick Rose to the Cleveland Cavaliers creates a whole new team dynamic going forward.

Many fans believed at the beginning of last season that the Knicks had constructed a super team. Combining Rose and Joakim Noah with Porzingis and Anthony inspired fans to believe in a successful season. Of course, things went a little differently, which probably played into the potential separation between the Knicks and Anthony. Rose is gone, Noah is here, Carmelo has one foot out the door, and Kristaps is the face of the franchise. Without a doubt things are different, so where does this leave fans? That’s a good question that can only be answered by the season’s peak. Of course a deep dive into the post season is the goal, but it’s too early to make that call. Taking one game at time is the only way Knicks fans can truly see if the franchise’s decisions this past summer were the right ones. With any luck the team’s direction will lead to the Knicks hanging another Championship banner in the Garden. Knicks fans can only hope for the best.
