Baseball New York Mets Sweep Rockies out of Citi Field by Jayson Love August 13, 2015 Curtis Granderson is one of the Mets’ swinging a hot bat of late (Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports) A Rockies team that had just finished doing the New York Mets a huge favor in Washington D.C. over the weekend, did the Mets another favor when they played the part of the jobber as the Mets beat the Rockies every which way this week en route to a rare 4 game sweep. The Mets rode their pitching staff in the first three games of the series as Niese, Harvey and DeGrom all turned in gems with DeGrom and Harvey combining for 15 shutout innings. The series was capped with a gutsy performance of which Orel Hershiser would be proud. After allowing 2 first inning runs, young Noah Syndergaard navigated his way through 7 innings of 3 run ball and earned the win getting himself above .500 at 7-6 on the year. The Mets’ bats were clutch all week and it was capped by Thursday’s 12-run outburst which included Juan Lagares’s pinch hit three-run homer in the 8th inning, the Mets’ first pinch hit homerun since Chris Young went deep in July of 2014. Curtis Granderson hit his 20th homerun of the season today as well. Syndergaard turned in 7 innings on Thursday which marked the 52nd time this season that a Mets’ starting pitcher has gone at least 7 innings (credit to Danny Knobler) which leads the majors. It was also the 4th straight 7-inning performance for New York starters. The Mets opened the series with a great come-from-behind victory. Trailing 2-1 in the 7th, Curtis Granderson pinch hit for Niese and battled the count to 3-2 with the bases loaded facing left-hander Boone Logan. Logan tried to put a curveball over the inside corner but, he hit Granderson in the shoulder forcing in the tying run. The Mets would add 2 more and hold on for a 4-2 win that seemed to set the tone for the series. Manager Terry Collins called it a game they would not have won last year. Frankly, it is a game they wouldn’t have won last month. In back of DeGrom last night, Yoenis Cespedes hit his first homer as a New York Met last night. The Mets are set to welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games over the weekend. The Mets are currently 8-17 against the NL Central not coincidentally including the horrid 0-7 record to the Chicago Cubs. The Mets have a 4 game lead in the NL East over the Nationals.
