Tennis New York Open Debuts on Long Island by Ricardo Goodridge February 13, 2018 The New York Open made its first annual kick off at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Monday. The tournament previously held in Memphis, Tennessee, features 28 top male players and 16 top double on the ATP tour. Some of the players include Americans John Isner, Sam Querrey, Frances Tiafoe and Japan’s Kei Nishikori. South Africa’s Kevin Anderson is also in action as the top seed. Anderson had success in New York last season when he was able to make it to the finals of the U.S. Open. The Bryan Brother headline the doubles tournament. The tournament has already featured a match of young players squaring off. Frances Tiafoe faced Sebastian Korda in his opening round at the New York Open. Most are familiar with Tiafoe, but fans might not know of his opponent. Korda is 17 years-old and currently ranked number one on the junior’s tour. His father Petr Korda won the Australian Open singles in 1998 and the doubles in 1996. Korda followed in his dad’s footsteps this year by winning the Aussie Open’s junior title. Though he did lose to Tiafoe, Korda showed his talent by winning the first set. He lost 6-4, 4-6, 2-6. The New York Open should see other intriguing matches that features young and veteran player. The New York Open is scheduled to end February 18. The 250-point tournament features sponsors such as Emirates, Izod and the New York Community Bank.
