New York Rangers: Quick Hits

Before I get into possible roster moves the New York Rangers could make this offseason, there are some Ranger-related stories that have developed over the last few days.  Condolences go out to the loved-ones of Rangers forward and enforcer Derek Boogaard.  Boogaard was found dead in his apartment last night at the age of twenty-eight.  The cause and circumstances of his passing are still unknown, and will be respectfully documented here when the results of the official autopsy have been released, along with a feature celebrating his career.

Sean Avery has come out in support of same sex marriage, and says he will stand by any NHL player who wants to come out about his sexual preference.  This drew some fire from player agent, Todd Reynolds (www.nypost.com/p/blogs/nhlblog/agent_critical_of_rangers_avery_RJ1gEAcaBTSW5hMUmMwPfI), and ultimately led to the firing of Damian Goddard, a Toronto television broadcaster. www.nypost.com/p/sports/rangers/same_host_fired_for_comments_sex_AXVbSfQicT8wCcKOx0SojN

Former New York Rangers star, Jaromir Jagr could potentially be joining the Pittsburgh Penguins next season.  The word is Penguins management would love to see if he could be the long sought after wing for Sidney Crosby, and would love to see Jagr retire as a Pittsburgh Penguin.  Based on his style of play as a Ranger, I don’t know how well he would compliment The Kid’s game.  When he was a Ranger, the entire offensive flowed through Jagr.  The entire offensive scheme consisted of setting up Jagr at the top of the circle.  The other players merely retrieved the puck to pass it to him.  That isn’t going to happen with Crosby, nor should it.

Finally, there is growing evidence that next season’s Winter Classic will be played at Citizen’s Bank Ball Park in Philadelphia, and that the contest will feature the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers. (www.examiner.com/hockey-in-philadelphia/wanna-go) The NHL has been wanting to get the Rangers into a Winter Classic game for some time, and it appears it is finally going to happen.  Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts with the Philadelphia Eagles, the game will not be played on New Years Day, as is the custom.  Instead, the game will take place on January 2nd.
