Hockey New York Riveters Sign Olympian Michelle Picard by Chip Gianni June 14, 2016 Michelle Picard (USA Hockey) The New York Riveters announced on Monday that they signed former Olympian and Harvard Crimson defenseman, Michelle Picard, to a 17,500-dollar contract for the 2016-2017 National Women’s Hockey League season. Riveters general manger, Chad Wiseman said, “The success Michelle has had as a player speaks for itself. Her attitude, commitment and respect she has earned from every other coach and player she has worked with is what makes her a perfect fit for our organization.” Picard played in 128 games with the Crimson, while amassing 53 points (eight goals and 45 assists), while patrolling the blueline. The Taunton, Massachusetts native has suited up for 66 games with Team USA, since the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 World Championships. She has appeared in every Four Nations Tournament since 2010, as well as every IIHF Women’s World Championships since 2012. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, she played in five games for the women’s national team. Picard said, “I decided to join the NWHL, so that I could continue playing the game I love. Last year I was honored to be drafted, knowing that it provided a great opportunity for me to join the league this year. I am excited to be in New York and join my teammates in a battle for the Isobel Cup.” Picard was selected sixth overall in the inaugural NWHL draft, by the Connecticut Whale last spring, before being traded to the Riveters for forward Haley Skarupa during the restricted free agency period earlier this offseason. Picard was named to the Eastern College Athletic Association All-Academic Team in her Junior season, while serving as a co-captain. She was named All-Ivy League First Team and All-ECAC Hockey Third Team as well as being a finalist for ECAC Defenseman of the Year during her Senior season.
