The Sharks were not only victorious in the battle of the un-beatens, they claimed the Independent Women’s Football League’s Atlantic Conference Championship. With only one game left to play before the playoffs, the Sharks are riding a hot streak of momentum which is something that every team come playoff time looks for. The Sharks definitely have that brewing and this win bolsters their confidence that they already had before the game, according to Sharks Defensive Coordinator Collette Smith. “The confidence level is high for the game and the team was amped up in practice on Tuesday,” said Smith earlier in the week. The Sharks came out of the gates slow in the first quarter, letting Carolina draw first blood with a 6-0 lead. With a few great plays from a couple of players that the Sharks expected to have an impact in this game they never looked back. Defensive back T.J. Grimsley recorded her third interception for a pick-six late in the second quarter to widen the Sharks lead to 28-6. Brilynn Fields, who is second on the team in receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns caught her fifth touchdown of the year to end the first half. The second half of the game began where the first half ended which was with the Sharks scoring. The Sharks were able to break down the tough defense of the Phoenix who before Saturday nights game only gave up 21 points to opposing offenses. The Sharks are now 7-0 and have their eyes set on the playoffs. The New York will finish the regular season at home next Saturday against the Washington Prodigy (4-3), at Floyd Bennett Field at 6pm.
