New York Yankees acquire Alfredo Garcia in quiet deadline

Well, not much happened for the Yankees during the 2019 MLB Trade Deadline.  The only big deal that came about close to the deadline was one that sent today’s opposing Starting Pitcher, Zack Greinke, from Arizona to the Houston Astros.  The Astros gave up four of their high level prospects in the deal, but they got one of the most efficient pitchers in baseball, and put themselves above the Yankees on yet another trade deadline.

The only move the Yankees made was a minor league deal, as they traded away Joseph Harvey for Alfredo Garcia, a Single A pitcher for the Colorado Rockies organization.  Other than that, most other pitchers they were linked to stayed put.  Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler stayed with the Mets.  Robbie Ray stayed with the Diamondbacks.  Madison Bumgarner is still a Giant and Matt Boyd is still a Tiger.

It makes you wonder if Brian Cashman is a bad deadline GM or if he genuinely thinks that highly of all of his top level prospects.  You have to give up to get so it doesn’t make much sense that Cashman hasn’t made a splash in quite some time.  I understand not wanting to get fleeced but at the same time what’s the point of having a loaded farm system if they can’t be used as leverage to get better now?

We will never know what was actually offered and what the deal breakers were (no pun intended) but either way the Yankees did not improve and the Astros did.  In no way, shape or form does this mean that the Astros are automatically the World Series champs, but as Marc Carig of The Athletic stated, it’s not good optics.
