Baseball New York Yankees’ Woes Continue by Staff Post May 5, 2016 Daily News On a night when their ace Masahiro Tanaka stepped up, the New York Yankees offense was once again no where to be found. The Yankees were shutout by Kevin Gausman and the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night, falling to an AL East worst 9-17 and wasting a masterful eight inning, five hit, seven strikeout outing by Tanaka. Failing to score just one run for their starter, the Yankees now have an ace in Tanaka that is just 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA. Tanaka has left with the game tied five times, including four with the score tied 2-2. The Yankees have now lost 15 of their last 21 games and are batting .236 as a team, including a .209 average with runners in scoring position. The Yankees have ailing veterans including Carlos Beltran, Mark Teixeira and Chase Headley who are hitting .250, .225 and .151 respectively. Headley is yet to record an extra-base hit and is continuing to be an automatic out. To make things worse, the Yankees placed 40-year old Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. A-Rod is only hitting .194, but he has five home runs and was turning it on as of late. The Yankees are also having issues in the pitching rotation. Michael Pineda has a 6.33 ERA, Luis Severino is 0-4, and Nathan Evoldi’s 5.64 ERA needs to be better. CC Sabathia has been good, Tanaka has been great, Starlin Castro has is hitting a team-high .284 and Andrew Miller has been perfect. Other than that, the Yankees are lacking just about everything. Dellin Betances blew two games last week in Boston, and Joe Girardi has made some questionable moves to say the least. On Thursday night, the Yankees and Orioles were tied in the 10th inning when Girardi, who was ejected earlier in the game for arguing a balk call, opted to go with rookie Johnny Barbato, who is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in the 10th instead of sticking with Betances, or going to the automatic closer, Miller. Barbato gave up two hits, and the Yankees brought in Miller who gave up a sacrifice fly. Betances also pitched in a 7-0 game the night before, which could be another reason he was not available to go another inning on Thursday. Most diehard Yankees fans realized that this time was going to come. The Yankees magic was going to run out eventually and they were going to struggle as they wait for big money contracts come off the books, but the Yankees are stuck. They cannot sign big players, they are lacking youth and overall most fair-weather fans may think karma has caught up with them. The team took away print at home tickets, raised ticket prices and have lacked attendance all season. Not to mention, the team across town is doing everything right. The New York Mets are hitting, pitching and winning. The Yankees are a bad baseball team right now, and the Mets are rolling along, there is no way of hiding it.
