Football NFL Owners vote unanimously on playoff expansion from 14 to 16 teams by Mecca Lennon November 10, 2020 Commissioner Roger Goodell announces Tuesday that owners unanimously approve playoff expansions from 14 to 16 teams. The changes will occur if “meaningful games are canceled” due to the coronavirus, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. Only two games this season has been canceled due to the virus (Pittsburgh at Tennessee and New England at Kansas City) and those games have already been made up. NFL owners unanimously approved a contingency plan to expand the playoff field from 14 to 16 teams if meaningful games are canceled because of COVID-19 — but NOT re-seed them, per Commissioner Roger Goodell. — Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) November 10, 2020 Pelissero previously provided the full playoff proposal plan. Here’s the full proposal on a playoff contingency plan that NFL clubs will vote on tomorrow. Note: The goal is still to play 256 games in 17 weeks (or 18 if needed). This contingency to expand playoffs from 14 to 16 teams only would trigger if a *meaningful* game is canceled. pic.twitter.com/JhM2XRpUK6 — Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) November 9, 2020 The league is continuously seeing players affected by the coronavirus and many players being placed on reserve/COVID-19 list as “high-risk”. Games can continue to be impacted, however the league is continuing to make strides.
