615recapblogsBridgewater, NJ-   Long Island Ducks (27-26) starter Matt Larkins (2-5) brought a no-hitter into the ninth inning to defeat the Somerset Patriots (32-21) 3-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday night.

Larkins struck out seven batters and didn’t allow a hit until Somerset’s Chris Grayson launched a home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning.

“I thought he commanded the zone. He worked both sides of the plate and had some good movement,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “He created a lot of early contact too and kind of rolled through. We had some decent at bats later on in the game against him, but we need to be a little better throughout the whole time and grind out some of those at bats.”

The Ducks broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Giovanny Alfonzo.

Angelo Songco gave Long Island a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single.

Somerset threatened with the tying run on first in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to plate any more runs after Grayson’s solo home run.

Duane Below (3-1) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits in two innings pitched. Patriots starter Lucas Irvine scattered just three hits over six scoreless innings of work in a no decision. Chin Hui Tsao earned his seventh save of the season, recording the final two outs.

The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Friday, June 16th with a 7:05 pm game against the York Revolution. The game includes Fireworks presented by Synchrony Bank.  For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
