Baseball No More Excuses For Met's Mike Pelfrey Regardless of the reason, Pelfrey and Met’s pitching coach Dan Warthen need to work on getting the issues fixed this week, leading up to his next start. It’s early in the year and no need to panic, but the Met’s will need an improved Pelfrey sooner rather than later. by Staff Post April 7, 2011 As New York Met’s starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey struggled through spring training, we heard the usual excuse…”Just working on some thing” or “Just getting my work in.” The teams ace by default finished the spring with a line that looks like 1-2, 5.63 ERA. Pelfrey has now made two starts in the regular season and his numbers are even worse. After being pounded by the Philadelphia Phillies, Pelfrey is 0-1 with a 15.63 ERA in two games. In 6.1 innings this season, the right-hander has given up 12 hits and 11 earned runs (12 total). Not the stuff of a top of the rotation pitcher. Heck, it’s not even the numbers you would accept from a fifth starter. Sure hope he’s not still “working on things.” “I was bad last week and I was even worse tonight,” Pelfrey said after allowing seven runs to the Phillies. “I let them down again. It stinks.” Pelfrey has walked five batters, struck out three, and given up two home runs, in just over six innings. Simply put, ‘Pelf’ is getting rocked. Luckily the Mets other starters, Jonathan Niese, R.A. Dickey, and Chris Young have been solid. Up and down the Mets lineup, players are swinging hot bats and scoring runs in bunches. In fact, Pelfrey did not get the lose last night thanks to a seven run rally by his teammates. There is no doubt Pelfrey will improve, his stuff is to good. The Mets do not have a true ace on the staff with Johan Santana out with an injury. They will need Pelfrey to get his game straightened out quickly. After the game, there were no excuses, just explanations. Pelfrey said he forced to many offspeed pitches. Regardless of the reason, Pelfrey and Met’s pitching coach Dan Warthen need to work on getting the issues fixed this week, leading up to his next start. It’s early in the year and no need to panic, but the Met’s will need an improved Pelfrey sooner rather than later.
