Despite major lapses throughout the game, Notre Dame held it together late and defeated Northwestern 70-66 in the championship game of the Legends Classic from the Barclays Center.

In the first half, both teams went on runs with Northwestern being led by swingman Scottie Lindsey who scored eight points quickly. Notre Dame answered and made their move by continuing their hot three-point shooting that they had on display on Monday night against Colorado. Notre Dame’s 60 percent shooting from three helped the Fighting Irish build an 11-point lead but Northwestern held Notre Dame scoreless for the final 4:47 of the half and cut the Irish lead down to 40-34 at the half.

After both teams exchanged baskets and defensive stops, the game was at a four-point Notre Dame lead midway through the second half. The game changed after Notre Dame fell victim to a Northwestern 6-0 run after the Wildcats tied the game at 58. A 7-0 Irish run over a 4:25 span gave Notre Dame a 65-64 lead with 3:21 remaining in regulation.

Bryant McIntosh, on his third opportunity, made a driving layup to give Northwestern a one point lead of their own. Matt Farrell converted a three-point play with 14.7 left to give Notre Dame a 68-66 lead. Northwestern’s game-tying shot attempt was missed by McIntosh and Farrell sealed the Notre Dame win with two free throws as Notre Dame won their first Legends Classic title.

Farrell, who was named Legends Classic MVP, finished with 18 points, six assists and three rebounds. Steve Vasturia had 18 points for Notre Dame (5-0) as he knocked three big long range shots for the Irish at various points of the game.

Northwestern was plagued by turnovers as the Wildcats committed 15 in the game with McIntosh being the main culprit he had four of his own. The Wildcats were led by Lindsey who scored 18 points in the loss while Vic Law added 14 for Northwestern who with the loss moves to 3-2.

Next up for Notre Dame is Chicago State at home on Nov. 26 while Northwestern returns home to face Bryant on Nov. 25.
