The New York Riveters of the National Women’s Hockey League took part in a special preseason game against the New York City Fire Department on September 27 at the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn, NY.

For the special game, the Riveters partnered with the FDNY and their non-profit organization, Friends of Firefighters. FOFF is dedicated to addressing the physical, mental health and wellness needs of New York City’s firefighters and their family members.

FDNY Captain, Tom Reno said, “That was a lot of fun, we were definitely playing against a lot of skilled hockey players out there and they never gave up. They played honest the whole time, which made this game great.”

Reno continued, “I represent the fire department, so for me it is an honor to play games like this.”

The FDNY came out strong as Charles Selock, Ed Brehan and Jim Brecker would light the lamp in the first. The Riveters answered back with one of their own in the second as Providence College Alumni and Team Austria member got the Riveters on the board. New York’s Bravest would add another at the end of the second, when Captain Reno would find the back of the net.

The fans attending the special game were treated to a defensive third period until Brecker would register his second tally to give the FDNY a 5-1 lead. Brooke Ammerman would then add a second goal for the Riveters before New York’s Bravest would make it 6-2.

The two teams continued to play a four on four overtime and a three on three shootout after the final horn sounded. In the shootout, Ammerman, Madison Packer and Erin Barley-Maloney showed off their skills to the fans.

The Riveters will play another preseason game at Chelsea Piers in New York City before traveling to Stamford, Connecticut for the historic first game of the NWHL.
