NYPL All-Star Game Recap (Video)

RICHMOND COUNTY BANK BALLPARK, Staten Island, New York

Players reported to Richmond County Bank Ballpark Wednesday morning and hung out in the clubhouse, introducing themselves to competitors turned teammates for the 2019 New York Penn League All-Star game. Many players went through their daily routines of hitting in the batting cage and throwing on the field before batting practice. Team Red, highlighted by Rays first-rounder Greg Jones and Orioles second-rounder Kyle Stowers, took batting practice first. While they hit, Team Blue, highlighted by Phillies first-rounder Bryson Scott, Indians #6 prospect George Valera and Pirates second-rounder Jared Triolo signed autographs on the concourse for fans before they switched after 45 minutes.

The Home Run Derby began at 5:30, but after only two rounds and one home run hit, the rain began to come down and the derby was canceled. The one home run hit was by one time NCAA home run champion Nick Ready of the Batavia Muckdogs.

The rain stopped just in time for the NYPL Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Among those inducted were the man to break the MLB managerial color barrier, Gene Baker as well as Staten Island Yankees GM Jane Rogers, New York Yankees legend Bernie Williams, and Josiah Viera, who was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria, a disease which leads to rapid aging. Starting at 10 years old, Josiah was the honorary bench coach for the State College Spikes. He recently passed away at the age of 13 years old. His grandfather fought back tears and looked up to the sky as he received the plaque for Josiah’s induction. He walked off to a standing ovation.

Following the inductions, the inductees threw out first pitches and signed autographs alongside Yankees legends Mickey Rivers and Bucky Dent, who were also on hand.

The Red team took the field, and within a few minutes of the first pitch, the Blue team was up by one after a base hit by Joe Davis (Spinners) which scored JD Orr (Muckdogs). Blue then plated two runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Milton Smith (Muckdogs) and RBI single by Kendall Simmons (Crosscutters) followed by one run in the third on a Bryan Lavastida (Scrappers) sacrifice fly. Team Red came back and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly by David Vinsky (Spikes), an RBI single by Caldioli Sanfler (Doubledays) and RBI base hit by Greg Jones (Renegades). The score was 4-3 after four innings of play with the Blue team leading.

A home run by Nathan Perry (Valley Cats) in the 6th gave the Red team another run before their defensive errors in the 7th put the Blue team ahead by a score of 7-3. A Kyle Stowers (IronBirds) Home Run gave Red another run, and the final score of the ballgame was 7-4.

Nathan Perry received MVP of the ballgame, for his Solo home run in his lone at-bat in the 6th inning.

“That was a really special moment.” Perry told me in a post-game media session. “I had one chance to get an at-bat and put a good swing on a pitch and it was a really good feeling.”
