Odell Beckham Jr. is an overrated, overpaid wide receiver

Odell Beckham Jr. is overrated.

Yes you heard me. Odell Beckham Jr. is an elite playmaker, dynamic receiver, and the most overrated player in the NFL.

But Chris, Odell isn’t overrated. He’s a game changer and a top 5 wide receiver in the league. He routinely makes insane catches and a five yard slant can turn into a 70 yard touchdown almost every play. Add in the fact that Eli Manning can’t get him the ball properly or he doesn’t have enough time, and no wonder he hasn’t produced the way he should.

Let me stop you right here Giants fans. Just as Eli Manning is perceived to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, Odell Beckham Jr. is the best receiver of all time.

Odell Beckham is still a fantastic player and I would have him on my team one hundred times over, but to put him in the elite category of wide receivers is wrong. Just because he is the most dynamic receiver in the league doesn’t make him the best. Here are three reasons why Odell Beckham Jr. is an overrated wide receiver.

Easy drops

Elite wide receivers do not drop the ball as much as OBJ does. It doesn’t matter that he can catch the ball upside down and behind his back with one hand. Odell Beckham Jr. sometimes can’t even catch the ball with two hands.

The amount of times I’ve seen him drop routine balls is astounding. It’s most likely always the case of trying to run before securing the ball, but a guy this talented should not be dropping balls like that.

People will blame Eli Manning for errant throws but if you watch some games Beckham clearly can catch a lot of these no problem. As stated before, he is IMMENSELY talented but he’s not Jerry Rice or Michael Irvin.

Detrimental to team success

Probably the least redeeming quality about Beckham, one that probably knocks him down a few pegs, is that he is overall a detriment to the Giants despite being an otherworldly talent.

The Giants have won zero playoff games with OBJ, have constantly had to answer questions when he misbehaves, and always have a media circus around them because of him.

This isn’t just a wins or losses thing. Calvin Johnson never had success but he was an elite wide receiver. Barry Sanders never won but he was the best running back of all time. This is about OBJ constantly putting himself and his teammates in bad spots, whether it be on or off the field.

It’s all about the money

If you’re going to be paid like the best player in the NFL, you need to play like you’re the best player in the NFL, day in and day out.  That’s not to say that Beckham doesn’t deserve a ton of money based off potential.  But when you’re getting paid like the best receiver in the NFL and routinely taking plays off, acting like a fool on the sideline, and not giving 100%, that money isn’t well spent.

A lot of people say that the Giants should have traded Beckham when they had the chance instead of signing him to a long term deal.  While I personally don’t think that’s the right move (he’s too dynamic), they find themselves having a ton of money invested in a player who can be suspended at any moment for his antics and who has a history of soft tissue injuries.

Not only has Odell had multiple temper tantrums for not getting his way, he can’t stay on the field for games at a time.  Whether it be an ankle injury, or a pulled hamstring, the Giants aren’t getting the most out of their top receiver.  Add in moments like Sunday where Beckham clearly went to protect himself rather than dive on what could have been a game changing onside kick, and you have a recipe for disaster.
