Baseball Odubel Herrera continues to play well despite the Philadelphia Phillies lack of success by Matthew Burks June 21, 2016 Odubel Herrera (Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports) The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t had a whole lot to be proud about this season. Between sloppy pitching, sub-par batting, and error filled field play, the 2016 season seems to be quickly running away from this team. Although there are many negatives that can be associated with this season there is one major bright spot and that is center fielder, Odubel Herrera. Coming to the Phillies last year, Herrera was seen as a very versatile player so it was unknown where he would be playing for this team. Early on, though, it seemed that Odubel had found himself a home in center field. After putting together a productive rookie season, 2016 was a year to see if he could continue to produce. It seems as if that question has already been answered only half way through the season. The former Rule 5 draft selectee has been nothing less than stellar in his second season as a starter. All you need to do is take a look at the stat line to see how well he is doing this season. Currently, Herrera is batting .302 and in 70 games already has 11 more walks than he had all of last season. He has proven to be more than capable of being a quality leadoff hitter for this organization. The 24-year-old has put together quite an impressive 2016 campaign and shows no signs of slowing up. Herrera has been the most consistent player on this roster. Regardless of how well the team is performing, Herrera seems to always be on his game. Right now, Herrera looks to be the only player on this team that deserves an All-Star bid. In relation to center fielders in the MLB he is currently in the top-five in batting average, top-five in hits, second in walks, and second in OBP. It’s obvious that the Philadelphia Phillies are in a rebuilding process and it is uncertain as to which players on the current roster will be on the team once they are relevant again. With all that said one thing is for sure, and that’s the fact that the Philadelphia Phillies have their center fielder of the future in Odubel Herrera.
