OT Will Beatty Placed on PUP Among Giants Roster Moves

The Giants announced a number of roster moves to get to the league limit of 75 on Tuesday.

Most prominently, left tackle Will Beatty, who had previously been on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, was moved to the Reserve/PUP list. Beatty is recovering from a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in the spring, and hasn’t practiced since. Players placed on the Reserve/PUP list must sit out the first six games of the year, so Beatty will be first eligible to return in Week 7 vs. the Cowboys.

The Giants also placed defensive backs Bennett Jackson (knee) and Josh Gordy (hip) on Injured Reserve, ending their seasons.

Gordy was competing for a spot in the Giants’ defensive backfield before he left Saturday’s loss to the Jets with a hip injury. Jackson was in the running to start at one of the safety spots, but tore his ACL late in the Giants’ win over the Jaguars.

Offensive lineman Brandon Mosley (undisclosed) and running back Akeem Hunt (hamstring) were waived/injured, ending their seasons too. If they clear waivers, both players should revert to IR.

Mosley, a fourth-round pick out of Auburn in 2012, struggled to stay healthy in his first three seasons as a pro. Hunt, an undrafted rookie out of Purdue, impressed in the preseason, but there may not have been room for him on the roster. If he passes through waivers unclaimed, the Giants will retain his rights, and he can compete for a roster spot next summer.

The following players were also waived on Tuesday: safety Justin Halley, wide receivers Juron Criner and Derrick Johnson, punter Robert Malone, offensive linemen Eric Herman and Michael Bamiro, defensive end Jordan Stanton, defensive tackle Jimmy Staten and tight end Will Tye.

The biggest names of that bunch are probably Criner, Herman and Malone. Criner played in 12 games for the Raiders as a rookie in 2012, catching 16 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He has played in just one game since. Herman is a former seventh-round pick who has spent two seasons on the Giants’ practice squad. Malone received four punts in the Giants’ first preseason game, but incumbent Steve Weatherford has handled all punts in the second and third preseason games.

The Giants also announced they have re-signed kicker Chris Bowell, who was waived by the team back on August 16. Starter Josh Brown is dealing with a leg injury, so expect Boswell to handle kicking duties in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Patriots.

The Giants will have their 75-man roster for the Patriots game, but the roster must be trimmed again to 53 players by September 5.
