Boxing Patrick Day dies from brain injuries suffered while fighting by Daniel Yanofsky October 17, 2019 Another tragedy has struck the world of boxing. More importantly, another tragedy has struck the home of a loved one. About four days after landing in a coma following a fight against Charles Conwell, Patrick Day has passed away following multiple brain injuries. Promotor Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment broke the news earlier tonight. Born in Freeport, the 27-year-old Day was battling in a bout against Conwell on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk v. Chazz Witherspoon. He was hit hard in the fourth and eighth round, but it wasn’t until the tenth where things got dark. Two rights and a left hook by Conwell knocked Day to the floor, and he wasn’t getting up. His head slamming down, emergency responders immediately took a look at him. Day was brought to the hospital in hopes he would wake up. Unfortunately, he never did. During his short life, boxing allowed Patrick to impact many communities, both big and small. In his hometown of Freeport, Long Island, he was a beacon of light and the star pupil at the Freeport PAL, the gym he trained in from the moment he began boxing until the last bout of his career,” DiBella stated. “He was recognized as one of Long Island’s finest professional fighters for years. He was a fixture in the boxing community throughout New York City. If we are remembering the life of Patrick Day, let us also remember he was a National Champion, a Golden Gloves winner and an Olympic Team alternate. Starting out as a welterweight, Day ended up winning the WBC Continental Americas Championship in 2017 and the IBF Intercontinental Championship this year. A true Long Island son, Patrick Day exemplified all that was right with the world of boxing. Gifted with the skills he had, Day used it to provide a positive influence on everyone around him. “Patrick Day didn’t need to box,” DiBella continued. “He came from a good family, he was smart, educated, had good values and had other avenues available to him to earn a living. He chose to box, knowing the inherent risks that every fighter faces when he or she walks into a boxing ring. Boxing is what Pat loved to do. It’s how he inspired people and it was something that made him feel alive.” It is another unfortunate death in the world of boxing. Recently, Maxim Dadashev died due to injuries sustained in the ring, as well as Hugo Alfredo “Dinamita” Santillan. We here at Double G Sports offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Patrick Day.
