Patriots announce signing of Jonathan Cheshire

The Somerset Patriots signed pitcher Jonathan Cheshire, according to a team release.

He will be active for Somerset’s series opener against Long Island on June 18 unless weather suspends the game.

Cheshire spent his first two years of pro ball in the Toronto Blue Jays organization after they drafted him in the 36th round in 2017 and bounded around their farm system in 2019.

The 24-year-old Grand Rapids, Michigan native made 14 appearances across three levels with High-A Dunedin, Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo.

The 6-foot-1 reliever compiled an 11-2 career record and a 2.48 ERA over three professional seasons.

The Patriots own a league-best team ERA of 3.32.
