Patriots Bats Explode In 13-10 Win Over Skeeters

Sugar Land, Texas – The Somerset Patriots (7-2) carried a season high in both hits and runs into a 13-10 victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters (7-2) Sunday afternoon at Constellation Field.

The Skeeters took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Barrett Barnes and Matt Chavez. Somerset responded in the next half inning to tie up the game on a two-out RBI double from Aaron Dudley and a two-out RBI single from Adam Weisenburger.

Justin Trapp (1) launched a solo home run to left field in the top of the third to give Somerset a brief 3-2 lead, but Sugar Land answered with a run-scoring double play groundout in the bottom of the inning to tie up the game.

Somerset opened up the contest in a six-run fifth inning that saw 10 batters come up to the plate. RBI base hits from Trapp, Kyle Roller, Alex Castellanos, Danny Dorn and Dudley, along with a Weisenburger sacrifice fly, highlighted the inning. Kyle Kubitza (1) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 9-4 ballgame.

The Patriots added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a Mike Fransoso RBI single and a Dorn RBI base hit. The Skeeters, however, answered once again on a Kubitza (2) grand slam to right field in the last of the sixth which cut the Patriots lead to 11-8. Anthony Giansanti (2) later added a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring Sugar Land within a run.

Somerset plated two insurance runs in the top of the ninth thanks to a three-error inning from the Skeeters. Weisenburger scored on an error from second baseman Colin Walsh before Alfredo Rodriguez topped off the scoring by stealing home later in the inning. Dustin Antolin tossed a scoreless ninth inning to give Somerset the 13-10 win.

Seven different Patriots batters finished the game with an RBI, while Rodriguez finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

“We did a good job of staying aggressive all game long,” said Rodriguez. “We kept on getting guy on base, and the more guys we got on, the better pitches we got. We were able to take advantage in the spots where we needed to.”

Nate Roe (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Tyler Badamo (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 4.1 innings of work. Antolin (1) earned his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

The 2018 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until Tuesday, May 8th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Road Warriors at 6:35 pm. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com
