Pete Alonso hits HR no. 53, passing Aaron Judge for the rookie record

As the 2019 season started to blossom, so did the potential of one Pete Alonso. A true powerhouse the moment he stepped to the plate, fans were salivating over him hitting monster home runs at the once cavernous Citi Field. What they didn’t expect was him making history.

In front of a packed Citi Field crowd, many of whom paid to see him, Alonso hit a long home run to deep center field. With that shot, his 53rd, the first baseman broke Aaron Judge’s home run rookie record he set in 2017. Facing an NL East rival in the Braves, Alonso hit a fastball off of Mike Foltynewicz.

Following the home run, Pete could be seen crying on the field. In the post-game interview on FOX, Alonso acknowledged former MLB greats, saying he accomplished a lot in just a short period of time.

“He’s not moved to tears often,” stated his mother, Michelle, on the FOX telecast. “So for him to feel that reward and be moved to tears, that warms my heart because I was certainly falling in my seat at the moment at the same time. It was a family cryfest.”

It has been a season to remember for Pete Alonso. At one point, management was considering him stay down in the minors to start the 2019 campaign. During his time on the roster he has:

  • Won the Home Run Derby
  • Became an All-Star
  • Set the Mets’ single-season HR record
  • Set the single-season rookie HR record
  • Coined “LFGM”
  • Organized a 9/11 tribute

Showing his leading abilities, Alonso was able to carry this team towards a second-half surge. His reward for all of these deeds? A guaranteed shot at NL Rookie of the Year.

Alonso has hit 11 home runs in the month of September and has set numerous franchise records. That one home run, however, will be one that Alonso, Mets fans and the franchise will never forget.
