Phillies Prospect Report: Nick Maton

Clearwater, FL-

Phillies prospect Nick Maton, their seventh-round pick from 2017, has shot up on prospect lists this season as he has broken out at the plate. The 22 year-old is second on his Clearwater Threshers in batting average (.276), hits (93), and OBP (.358) and is third in steals (11).

“Just staying simple (has been the key to my success)…not trying to do too much. That’s basically it.” Maton says. “My mental approach is to see a fastball early and hit a fastball.”

Maton was drafted out of Lincoln Land Junior College, where he transferred to following his freshman year at Illinois State. In 2017, Maton led his Lincoln Land offense in every single category, hitting .408 with eight homers.

Marty Malloy, Threshers manager and former MLB second baseman, has been Maton’s coach for the last two seasons. Maton credits him with his development at the plate and helping him adapt to professional baseball.

Maton could definitely help the Phillies in the future as a utility player off the bench, being that he can play third base, shortstop and second base. In my opinion, his versatility and bat could get him to the big leagues in the next season or so.
