The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a somewhat inconsistent start to the 2017 regular season. With question marks all over the roster, it is hard to really pinpoint where this teams trajectory seem to be. However, this organization needs to take this year as a chance to evaluate the talent on the team in order to ensure prosperous years ahead.

One area that Phillies are really going to need to look at is pitchers. With a couple of young players in the minors knocking on the door to the majors, and young players in the current rotation, the Phillies need to see which guys can succeed on the major league level.

One player in particular is Vincent Velasquez. Vincent might be the closest thing to a tease that there is in the MLB. At times, he boasts a fastball with incredible velocity and movement that hitters are unable to anticipate. Other times, though, his inability to command his pitches gets him into a hole and allows the opposite team to take advantage.

This seems to be a make-or-break year for Velasquez. There were high hopes in the organization that he would be able to get it together and become a truly great pitcher, but right now he is having trouble showing it.

Velasquez has the ability to be a top-tier pitcher, but one wonders if he will ever be able to overcome his inconsistencies.

His first two starts this season were not exactly what this team hoped for. Both resulting in an early pitching change and were composed of his inability to command his pitches. While this is a concerning start, it certainly does not mean it will go on for the rest of the season.

Velasquez needs to settle down and gain composure when out there on the mound. His ability is unquestionable and, at times, seems to be truly incredible. However, it is not enough to have the potential to be great, one must be able to show it on a consistent basis. If Velasquez cannot do that, this may be his last season with the ball club.
