Finishing 10th in the voting for the six-member team, Ponds claims a spot on the ballot as the only BIG EAST player, surpassing Marquette’s Markus Howard and Villanova’s Eric Paschall in the voting process. Ponds’ deserved spot on the ballot is a result of his 21.6 average points per game for St. Johns. He also is the new record holder for the St. John’s sophomore scoring record with 647 points in a season. Ponds is most notable for his performance back in February, where he scored 33 points over Duke to win at Madison Square Garden before pouring in 26 against Villanova, making that the first win over a no. 1 opponent in 33 years for St. John’s. Just last week, Ponds was spotlighted as one of 20 players nationwide to be listed on the preseason watch list for the Bob Cousy Award, a distinction that acknowledges the top point guard in college basketball.
